The reflection of the sonic boom off the bullet as it passed each pole sounded like a short burst from a machine gun. Back in the day when I lived out where folks were few and far between, Every now and then I'd shoot my '06 parallel to a row telephone poles alongside the road. That was an interesting article linked above. I wouldn't trust 'em for humane killing of small varmints past that and sure wouldn't advise on anything bigger than a bushy tailed tree rat. Not a lot of power but I've popped squirrels off dad's bird feeders with 'em at 20 to 30 yds.

In most cases the bullet hitting what you shot at is louder than the shot itself. If you want REALLY quiet ammo without resorting to a suppressor, 22CB caps out of a rifle are very quiet.

Anything else made recently and I doubt they'd cycle. They'd probably work fine in a REM 552 as well. It was made to shoot 22 short, 22 long, and 22 long rifle interchangeably, so it handled them no problem.

They cycled just fine in my old REM Mod 51 semi-auto. Not silent by any stretch of the imagination. Quieter than standard or high velocity anyway. They're fun and relatively quiet out of a rifle. Also have two very trusted dealers who I can recommend to buy from if you like them ( most who try them want one). I have many many acres of land to shoot on here and love to have folks over to play.

the movies are total BS and most places like utube do not give you the same experience as being there.Īnybody in northern Maine wants to try suppressors or MG's fell free to let me know. Until you try a variety of suppressors out yourself you will not understand what exactly they can do. Other NFA toys are also more likely to be seen.įor all those who do not own any or have not personally shot any I urge you to find a local place or local folks who do and chat em up and get them to let you try them out most NFA folks like gun folks in general are friendly and love to pass there hobby ( addiction ) to others. These days depending on the range you are likely to see a few folks with them. Way back when I first got started I would not take one to the range due to the bs I would get form people who thought I was breaking the law. Over the past 10 years suppressors have become much more mainstream. 45 also suppresses extremely well as most factory 45 acp ammo is subsonic. The 5.56 for example does not suppress well the best 5.56 suppressors out there are surprising loud with factory ammo out of a ar. I have suppressors in most every caliber and the difference in Many is astounding. A quality well made suppressor for many calibers can eliminate almost all noise except for the sonic boom ( as of yet the only way to get rid of the boom is to use subs ). Allot of what is on the internet and chatted about at ranges and shops is false. Having been stamp collector for over 25 years I know what is what. This is the reason both words are acceptable to the ATF on a official forms unlike how strict they are with all others words. so while using the word with a Maxium would be correct it would not be with the majority of current manufacturers. Also most modern manufactures do not call them silencers. However it is still incorrect as they do NOT silence the firearm they suppress the noise signature. In any case, the shot was fired through a window into a wooded area which absorbed any sonic noise from the bullet.)Ĭlick to expand. You are correct that is what he called them. (I assume, but don't know, that a subsonic cartridge was used. One person (my father) who witnessed the firing of a Model 1903 rifle with a Maxim Silencer indoors stated that the only sound heard was the click of the firing pin. But reports from the old days indicate that the Maxim was a effective, though a very expensive, silencer. But in many cases, that noise is lost in the ambient noise and in any case will originate with the bullet wherever it is, rather than with the gun, so the gun will be harder to locate.Īs to effectiveness, most suppressors today don't really "silence" the report of the firearm they merely cause it to NOT sound like a gun. It does not and cannot suppress the "sonic boom" caused by a supersonic bullet as it moves down range.

A silencer (or suppressor if you want) reduces or eliminates the noise of the gas escaping from the muzzle of the gun after the bullet leaves the muzzle.
